About Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan.

 

Mr. Kajiyama is a graduate of Nihon University’s College of Law. He was born on October 18th, 1955 in Hitachiota City, Ibaraki, Japan.

 

Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi was appointed Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on October 25, 2019.

Mr. Kajiyama also assumed the ministerial roles of Minister in charge of Industrial Competitiveness, Minister for Economic Cooperation with Russia, Minister in charge of the Response to the Economic Impact caused by the Nuclear Accident, and Minister of State for the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation.

Immediately prior to his current assignments, Mr. Kajiyama served as the Senior Director for the Committee on Economy, Trade and Industry at the House of Representatives, the Lower House of Japan’s National Diet.

Mr. Kajiyama’s previous ministerial experience includes serving two terms as the Minister of State for Regional Revitalization and Regulatory Reform, and Minister in charge of Regional Revitalization, Administrative Reform and Civil Service Reform. In 2012, he was appointed State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Previously, Mr. Kajiyama held key parliamentary roles in Japan’s House of Representatives as Chairman of the Special Committee on Disasters, Committee on Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and as the Senior Director for the Committee on Economy, Trade and Industry.

Mr. Kajiyama has served as an elected official in Japan’s House of Representatives since 2000, successfully winning re-election 6 times. He currently represents Ibaraki’s 4th district.

Prior to seeking public office, Mr. Kajiyama served as President of a company he had founded. Mr. Kajiyama started his professional career in 1979 when he joined the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation, currently known as the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.
