Globe Chamber of Commerce and Industry: Africa Garment, Leather and Textile Expo

As Globe Chamber of Commerce and Industry tends to organize an Africa Garment, leather industry and textile expo, lets take this opportunity to reflect on the potential of the garment and textile industry to create value and wealth across the continent, with women and youth at the heart of this change.

The Organization believes that the textile and garment industry can drive Africa’s industrial transformation and create some of the millions of jobs we need. A stable future depends on the development of labor-intensive sectors like manufacturing and services. Within the manufacturing sector, the organization knows that job creation “from new activities” such as textile design, production and leather industries – also known as creative industries - will result in new trade patterns for African countries.

In addition, the same platform shall be available for fashion designers of traditional fabrics to showcase various designs that can be made from these fabrics, so as to create interaction between the manufacturers, designers and consumers. This is about the need to revive/reinvigorate the value, flair, culture, passion and love by Africans for their fabrics which are a large part of Africa’s, rich heritage. In turn through this effort, strategically increasing the supply and demand of these fabrics by both producers and consumers respectively. The focus is to protect Africa’s rich heritage, economy, and culture. It is for these reasons the globe chamber of commerce & industry was prompted to design this historic event.

Worthy of mention also is the fact that global textile and garment industry market is valued around $1.3 trillion which is an impressive figure that is attractive to entrepreneurs. Unfortunately for the African subcontinent and Nigeria in particular, currently, trade has not been very profitable. The textile and garment industry responsible for production of textile materials have died a natural death and moribund. A recent case study demonstrates that in Nigeria, and once again currently, there are fewer than 30 textile factories. This is a reduction of 220, down from 250 in the 80s. Many of these remaining factories are producing under capacity which has also lowered the employment capacities. Globe chamber of commerce & industry has design this event to highlights certain steps for exhibitors to take that will enable them succeed in garment leather & textile market reviving the textile factories & industries in Africa.
